As surprising as it may sound, there are over 200 prescriptions and over the counter medications that can cause tinnitus or make your existing symptoms worse. Generally speaking, the higher the dosage of these medications, the worse your tinnitus will become. Depending on the medication dosage, your tinnitus might go away after removing it from your system.
Medications That Cause Tinnitus
- Antibiotics. Certain antibiotics, such as Polymyxin B, Erythromycin, Vancomycin and Neomycinare known to cause tinnitus.
- Chemotherapy Medications. Cancer fighting medications such as Carboplatin, Cisplatin, Mechlorethamine and Vincristine have all been proven to cause tinnitus.
- Diuretics. Water pills (diuretics), such as Bumetanide, Ethacrynic Acid, Furosemide and Lasix can cause tinnitus.
- Quinine & Chloroquine. These two medications are very effective at preventing malaria, but they also can cause unintended side-effects, like tinnitus.
- Antidepressants. Some of the most well known SSRI antidepressants have shown to cause tinnitus. These include Celexa, Luvox, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft.
- Blood Pressure & Heart Medicines. BP medications, like Atenolol, are good for lowering your blood pressure, but are known to cause chronic tinnitus.
- Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory. NSAIDs such as Advil, Aleve, Asprin and Motrin, taken in high-doses (usually 12 or more a day), can cause tinnitus.
- Food Additives. While not a medication, there are several man-made food additives, such as NutraSweet, Splends and Aspartame, that have been linked to tinnitus. These should be removed completely from your diet. Be sure to check the ingredients on all packaged and processed foods to ensure you are not consuming these additives.
